Water Works

Location Information

Behind the Art Museum is where you’ll find a unique and exciting location, the Fairmount Water Works. The architecture and gardens make for a beautiful backdrop. In addition, you’ll have great views of Boathouse Row, the Schuylkill River, and several scenic areas, all within walking distance.

The Fairmount Water Works first opened its doors in 1815 as Philadelphia’s sole water pumping station. It was deactivated almost a century later, in 1909.

FWW was converted into a museum and environmental center in 2003. It has since become the region’s prime urban environmental education attraction. Also, it serves as The Delaware River Basin’s Official Watershed Education Center and Gateway Center for the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area. This is according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Fairmount Water Works is a National Historic Landmark, a National Civil Engineering Landmark, and a National Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Also, it was built to supply safe, clean drinking water to a community on the verge of phenomenal growth.

Tip: A permit is required for this area, and a wedding venue is also on the grounds. If there is a wedding at the venue on the day of your shoot, you may not be granted a permit.
