640 Waterworks Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19130
Behind the Art Museum is where you’ll find a unique and exciting location, the Fairmount Water Works. The architecture and gardens make for a beautiful backdrop. In addition, you’ll have great views of Boathouse Row, the Schuylkill River, and several scenic areas, all within walking distance.
The Fairmount Water Works first opened its doors in 1815 as Philadelphia’s sole water pumping station. It was deactivated almost a century later, in 1909.
FWW was converted into a museum and environmental center in 2003. It has since become the region’s prime urban environmental education attraction. Also, it serves as the Delaware River Basin’s Official Watershed Education Center and Gateway Center for the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area. This is according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Fairmount Water Works is a National Historic Landmark, a National Civil Engineering Landmark, and a National Mechanical Engineering Landmark. Also, it was built to supply safe, clean drinking water to a community on the verge of phenomenal growth.
Tip: A permit is required for this area, and a wedding venue is also on the grounds. If there is a wedding at the venue on the day of your shoot, you may not be granted a permit.

FAQs: Engagement Session at The Water Works
1. How will we select the best photo spots around the Water Works?
We’ll begin by discussing your vision, whether you prefer sweeping river views, architectural textures, or garden-like backdrops and then identify standout locations: the columned walkways, vintage gazebo, Schuylkill River terrace, or the steps toward the museum above. Because the Water Works grounds contain both formal architecture and natural elements, we’ll craft a route that offers variety while remaining efficient and relaxed.
2. What should we wear and how should we prepare for this waterfront & historic-structure setting?
Since the location merges elegant stone architecture with riverside views and landscaped lawns, we’ll guide you on wardrobe choices that complement the setting—flowing fabrics that catch the breeze, colors that stand out against stone or water, and shoes appropriate for a cobbled path or lawn. We’ll also cover logistics like parking, meeting point, and the best timing to arrive warm and ready.
3. How long should our session last, and can we include multiple “looks” in one shoot?
Yes, we’ll plan the session length to accommodate multiple looks: perhaps starting near the river terrace at golden hour, then walking to the vintage gazebo or architectural colonnade, then finishing with some relaxed portraits on the lawn or boardwalk. We’ll include transition time so you’re not rushed, and we’ll ensure you come away with a variety of imagery, from expansive vistas to intimate moments.
4. What happens if the light or weather isn’t ideal on the day?
We’ll monitor the weather and light ahead of time. If sunlight becomes harsh, we’ll pivot to shaded walkways, architecture that diffuses light, or choose the lawn when it’s softer. If overcast or wind picks up near the riverfront, we’ll adapt with portrait settings under columns, near architectural texture, or along sheltered paths. The Water Works gives us enough visual variety that we can adapt without compromising your style.
5. How will this engagement session help us feel comfortable and confident on our wedding day?
We’ll treat the session at the Water Works as your rehearsal, like walking through locations, interacting naturally, capturing candid moments and posed portraits, all in a relaxed environment. You’ll become familiar with our direction style, comfortable in front of the camera, and ready for your wedding day. When that day comes, we’ll already know how you two move and respond, which ensures smoother photography and more authentic expressions.
