5 Tips to Beat the Heat for a Summer Engagement Photoshoot

With the sweltering summers in the Philadelphia Metro Area, it isn't exactly ideal for outdoor engagement photo sessions. That's why many couples choose to schedule their weddings during the milder spring, fall, or even winter months. However, sometimes an engagement session during the summer heat is unavoidable. When that's the case, we get creative - either shifting things indoors or coming up with clever outdoor engagement photo ideas to help you beat that signature Philly humidity before it wreaks havoc on your carefully styled hair and makeup.

Over the years, we've picked up lots of great tips from real couples on how to keep your cool during those sultry summer engagement shoots. From strategic outfit choices to hair/makeup hacks to little luxuries that make a big difference, these are my top recommendations for an enjoyable (and sweat-free!) warm-weather session.

At Ralph Deal Photography, we structure summer sessions carefully to minimize discomfort and sweat. We avoid shooting in the heat of the afternoon and look for shaded spots near trees, water, or where we can hop in an air-conditioned car between sets. We'll do most of the close-up shots early when you're fresh, saving wider shots for later. And if we need to walk somewhere, that will be towards the end when it's cooler.

But there are things you can do too to prepare for a sultry summer shoot:

1. Get Professional Makeup for Summer Sessions

Having professional makeup done using waterproof products is vital for a summer engagement session. When the heat is on, you need makeup that can withstand sweat and humidity without smudging or melting away. Makeup artists skilled in handling summer conditions know all the tricks to ensure your look stays fresh and flawless throughout the shoot. From using long-lasting foundations to setting sprays that lock makeup in place, investing in professional makeup is a game-changer for keeping your cool and looking your best in the sweltering summer heat.

2. Wear Lightweight and Moisture-Wicking Fabrics

During your summer engagement session, choosing the right fabrics for your outfits can make all the difference in staying comfortable. Select lightweight materials that allow your skin to breathe and wick away moisture, helping to keep you cool and dry even on the hottest days. Dark colors are also a smart choice as they conceal sweat better than lighter shades. Additionally, you can consider bringing a change of clothes that you can easily slip into to cover up if needed, ensuring you stay comfortable and confident throughout the shoot.

3. Choose Hair Styling Tips for Summer

For the ladies, managing your hair in the summer heat is essential for staying comfortable and looking great in your engagement photos. Let your hair down to showcase your initial look while keeping you feeling fresh. Then, as the temperature rises, consider pulling your hair up into a stylish updo or ponytail to keep it off your neck and shoulders, helping you stay cool and preventing your hair from becoming a sweaty mess. This simple styling switch adds versatility to your photos and ensures that your hair stays picture-perfect despite the summer heat.

4. Pack Blotting Cloths and Portable Fans

To combat sweat and shine during a summer engagement photoshoot, be sure to pack some essential tools to help you stay fresh and comfortable. Blotting cloths are perfect for quickly absorbing excess sweat from your face and neck, leaving your skin looking matte and refreshed without disturbing your makeup. Portable fans can also provide instant relief from the heat, offering a refreshing breeze whenever you need it. These small but mighty tools are lifesavers for staying cool and composed during a sultry summer shoot, allowing you to focus on enjoying the moment and creating beautiful memories with your partner.

5. Embrace Relaxation

Perhaps the most important tip for surviving a summer engagement session is simply relaxing and enjoying the experience. Worrying about sweating can make you sweat more, so trust in your photographer's expertise and let go of any concerns about looking perfect.
