Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar

Location Information

Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar is a beautiful and unique setting for weddings and other special events. The gardens were designed by world-renowned landscape architect Marian Cruger Coffin, who was inspired by the English gardening style of the 18th century. The result is a stunning collection of gardens that feature a variety of flowers, plants, and trees.

Coffin's lifelong friend Henry Francis du Pont introduced her to the owners of Gibraltar, a rural estate mansion perched high on a roughly six-acre tract in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1916. Beginning that year, Coffin converted the early-19th-century estate's grounds into a romantic garden paradise. It perfectly blended her Massachusetts Institute of Technology schooling in Beaux-Arts classicism with the sophisticated flower garden style of Beatrix Farrand, whom she loved.

The gardens fell into disarray when their first owner died, but they were finally restored and are now open to the public, allowing anybody to enjoy their beauty.

This stunning Marian Coffin Garden is a part of Delaware's historical heritage. As well as a testament to a woman's determination to break free from traditional gender roles in pursuit of her dream.

Marian Coffin overcame all odds to realize her dream in the face of tradition, just as the gardens battle time and deterioration with the support of a dedicated group of individuals like you. Participate in your community's history. Help Preservation Delaware keep heroes like Marian Coffin's inspiring stories alive.

If you’re looking for a truly unique and romantic setting for your wedding, Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar is the perfect place for you.

"We could not have hired a better photographer for our wedding than Ralph. We have countless photos that we can use in our home and are thrilled to look back on to remember our wedding day. The day moves so quickly but Ralph did an incredible job capturing the moments throughout the day so we can re-live the emotions, setting, and all the love that filled the occasion. Ralph's process of getting to know my wife and I through the planning meetings and engagement session was more detailed and fun than expected. He wanted to get to know us. The level of effort that Ralph pours into his work mirrored the level of effort that we felt we were putting into the wedding day as a whole, which we were thrilled with. The post-wedding meeting is a great experience as well as Ralph allowed us to walk back through the day and choose the layout for our wedding album in-person in a theater-like setting. Working with Ralph to capture the irreplaceable moments on the most important day in our lives was the best choice we could have made!"
